AJ Rosales AIA LEED AP NCARB Architecture Planning Design
AIA LEED AP NCARB
AJ Rosales is an award-winning architect who employs various principles in his design work: sculptural form, abstract logic, sensual materiality, tectonic finesse, and technological savvy. He creates architecture that is dynamic and gestural, while simultaneously displaying an astute rationale. His design impetus stems from a desire to affect human perception via an exploration of spatial qualities, whether experienced through shape, color, texture, or more often than not - a pure conceptual framework.
His design skills are tempered by 20+ years’ experience in library, commercial, and residential construction. Possessing a working background on numerous complex multi-million dollar projects and nearly 40 libraries has led him to assume many roles including designer, project coordinator, construction administrator, marketer, presenter, and promoter. A collaborative leader known for his clear communication and effectiveness in working with construction teams, AJ has consistently achieved a delicate balance between pragmatism and the hypothetical while delivering his ideas on time and on budget. He allows himself - and his clients - the freedom to dream while grounding the process with a prudence that keeps them focused on the end goal.
During his seventeen-year tenure at Frye Gillan Molinaro Architects in Chicago, AJ was instrumental in the design and construction administration of the Poplar Creek Public Library, a four-year project that culminated in Library Journal naming it the number one New Landmark Library in the United States after a national competition. The magazine hailed the structure for its striking design that “entices users of all ages to spend time in the unique environment,” and one competition juror enthused: “This [building is] one I would travel out of my way to see.” The building also earned an AIA Chicago Interior Architecture award, a peer recognition of excellence. Subsequently, his decision to part from the firm to focus on developing a more personalized design approach has led him to a rich process of self-discovery.
Driven to push boundaries, AJ looks to what is possible and bends reality to achieve far beyond the expected, whether he is putting the finishing touches on a realized idea or a developing a conceptual competition entry. AJ credits his success to his fearless nature, an innate curiosity, and joy of diving into unknown territory, whether as an architect, or during his early years as an acclaimed musician. Not surprisingly, the accolades for his accomplishments demonstrate remarkable parallels between his music and architecture. Reviews of AJ’s compositions - which have been broadcast nationwide - have described his artistry as “brilliant” and similarly, reviews of his architecture have lauded his “superb intervention with spectacular spaces.”
After earning his BS Arch from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, AJ eventually sought to challenge, invigorate, and reinvent himself by earning a Master’s Degree at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc), a world-renowned, technologically focused center of experimental design in Los Angeles. While at SCI-Arc, he augmented his robust computer aided design skills, experimenting with cutting-edge tools such as digital sculpting and rendering, 3D printing, digital fabrication, and robotic design. His work was featured yearly in the SCI-Arc Spring Show, as well as the Institute’s website, both of which exhibit the best student work, and he also graduated with distinction. During this time, he immersed himself in architectural theory and philosophy, and collaborated on several projects with the experimental design-oriented firm Testa & Weiser, as well as RNThomsen architecture. AJ is a current member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), the Green Building Council (LEED AP BD+C accredited), is licensed in California and Illinois, and is NCARB Certified.
AJ is currently a Project Architect with Studio Gang in Chicago. His overall ideology has guided him toward a fluid, expressive aesthetic - conveyed through bold thinking, an adventurous spirit and an inquisitive mind. As a team member in Jeanne Gang's office he is poised to contribute to a disciplined creativity, moving with conviction into the next chapter of his professional life.
