Pluto + Proserpina (2015)
SCI-Arc: 3GA Studio
Instructor: Peter Testa
PROMPT: Completed in 1622, Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s triumphant sculpture depicts a scene from the abduction and rape of Proserpina, and her eventual journey with Pluto into the underworld. Utilizing a robot lab for experiments, we quickly became interested in the differences between light and shadow and their effect on form. This series of images was created by projection of photographic images onto the original object to affect the opacity and physicality of the geometry of the statue. The result was an agile and animated form that could disappear and reappear at will, with the potential that Proserpina could now escape her captor.
